Father Of Raided 9-Year-Old Pirate Bay Girl Settles Case For 300 Euros

Father Of Raided 9-Year-Old Pirate Bay Girl Settles Case For 300 Euros:
poohAfter being accused of illicit file-sharing earlier in the year a man from Finland was presented with an unsettling letter.
Anti-piracy group CIAPC (known locally as TTVK) said they’d tracked the man’s Internet account to the unlawful sharing of a single music album by local artist Chisu. To stop matters progressing further all he had to do was pay a settlement of 600 euros and sign a non-disclosure document.
However, he chose not to pay and true to their word, last Tuesday CIAPC escalated the matter. The police turned up at Aki Nylund’s house and upon discovering that the man’s 9-year-old daughter (now 10) had done the sharing, confiscated her Winnie the Pooh laptop.
“I got the feeling that there had been people from the MAFIA demanding money at the door,” Nylund explained.
There was outcry. Everyone from the girl’s father, the artist in question, the general public, and even Finland’s Minister of Culture had complaints to make about the heavy-handed and disproportionate action.
General feeling was that this mess could be an opportunity for a more sensible look at copyright enforcement, but today those hopes have been pushed aside.
The father of the now-10-year-old has agreed to pay a cash settlement to CIAPC of 300 euros, exactly half the original demand.
“We are very happy,” says CIAPC chief Antti Kotilainen. “In a way, we just continued the original negotiations from where we left off.”
In return CIAPC have withdrawn their request for a pre-trial investigation and the police have closed the file.
“We reversed the call for an investigation because we reached an agreement with the girl’s father,” Kotilainen said.
While Aki Nylund will be glad that the case is closed and his daughter’s property will soon be returned, the payment of a cash settlement effectively puts this case back to square one.
Little wonder that CIAPC are pleased with the outcome. Over a single instance of petty file-sharing their demand for cash has been satisfied, via the use of the police and public purse, and despite the outcry.
With this victory under their belt CIAPC will almost certainly be back with more cash demands in the future. Alternatively, we could see them insist that the government seriously considers a three-strikes style infringement system. This settlement has almost guaranteed that.

Company Sues Kickstarter Over 3D Printer Patent, Maligns 'Hackers And Makers'

Company Sues Kickstarter Over 3D Printer Patent, Maligns 'Hackers And Makers':
http://i.imgur.com/bLz3I.png
We've been pointing out for a while that one of the reasons why advancements in 3D printing have been relatively slow is because of patents holding back the market. However, a bunch of key patents have started expiring, leading to new opportunities. One, in particular, that has received a fair bit of attention was the Formlabs 3D printer, which raised nearly $3 million on Kickstarter earlier this year. It got a ton of well-deserved attention for being one of the first "low end" (sub ~$3,000) 3D printers with very impressive quality levels.

With Apple rumored to be attempting to acquire a security solutions provider, a new move by AuthenTec to sell a portion of its business suggests Apple is most interested in its fingerprint scanning technology.
AuthenTec has reached a deal to sell its embedded security solutions division to another company, Inside Secure, NFC World reported on Monday. The deal means that AuthenTec has retained ownership of its combined fingerprint and wireless near-field communication solution, which is part of a separate division.

A Senate proposal touted as protecting Americans' e-mail privacy has been quietly rewritten, giving government agencies more surveillance power than they possess under current law.
CNET has learned that Patrick Leahy, the influential Democratic chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee, has dramatically reshaped his legislation in response to law enforcement concerns. A vote on his bill, which now authorizes warrantless access to Americans' e-mail, is scheduled for next week.

DDoS Takes Down The Pirate Bay

DDoS Takes Down The Pirate Bay:
pirate bay downOver the past few days a person that goes by the nick “Zeiko” has caused quite a bit of trouble in the BitTorrent world.
After being denied an invite to the private BitTorrent tracker What.cd, he or she went on a rampage, hitting half a dozen BitTorrent sites with DDoS attacks.
The initial targets were private BitTorrent trackers and these have all since come back online. However, it appears that the DDoS attacks are not over yet. A few hours ago Zeiko shifted his aim towards public BitTorrent sites.
On Twitter thepiratebay.se was announced as the new target and not long thereafter the most-visited BitTorrent site did indeed go offline.
The first attack started about 9 hours ago, and The Pirate Bay eventually recovered, but went offline again after the second attack was announced.

The Pirate Bay team confirmed to TorrentFreak that they are indeed suffering from a SYN flood that originates from a small botnet. Nothing new for the BitTorrent site, who have decided to make use of the unexpected downtime by doing some maintenance on The Pirate Bay’s backend.
“It’s just a normal SYN flood from a small botnet,” The Pirate Bay team told TorrentFreak
“We’re taking the break to do some much-needed database upgrades. The site will come back as soon as we’re done with that.”
Last month The Pirate Bay moved its operation to the cloud so it’s better able to withstand outside attacks. Although cloud hosting does makes it easier for the site to recover from hardware failure and even a police raid, it is still hard to withstand DDoS attacks.
Despite the occasional downtime The Pirate Bay continues to expand its user base. It’s nearing the list of 50 most visited sites on the Internet and is currently ranked 13th in Sweden.

John McAfee, the founder of the world-renowned security solutions provider, is accused of having murdered his neighbor. McAfee claims that he’s innocent and he even believes that he might have been the killer’s target.
It’s no secret to anyone that John McAfee doesn’t get along with authorities from Belize. Back in April, the Gang Suppression Unit raided his home, confiscated his weapons and his passport, killed one of his dogs, and arrested him.

DDoS Attacks Take Down What.cd, BTN and More BitTorrent Trackers

DDoS Attacks Take Down What.cd, BTN and More BitTorrent Trackers:
whatBitTorrent trackers are no strangers to DDoS attacks. Pretty much all sites of a respectable size are targeted on occasion by unknown sources. Today is one such day, but this time the source appears to be rather public.
A person using the nickname Zeiko is claiming responsibility for the DDoS action, which was initially intended to force What.cd staff into giving out an invite.
Zeiko joined IRC (Internet Relay Chat) to convince site staff that he already had an account, but when the admins couldn’t find any record of it in the database Zeiko turned his anger on the site.
“What.cd is now being under DDoS attack until I get my invite,” he wrote in What.cd’s IRC channel.

Zeiko threatening in IRC

While these kinds of threats are not uncommon, this one proved to be serious when What.cd became unreachable.
Later the same user started a Twitter account using the handle “Zeiko Anonymous” announcing the “Piracy DDoSes” with What.cd as the first target.

But it didn’t stop there. After a few hours Zeiko was looking to inflict more damage, asking whether PassThePopcorn.me (PTP) or Broadcasthe.net (BTN) should be next.
The disgruntled user settled for the latter and announced BTN as Piracy DDoS Project #2. The TV-tracker has been in maintenance mode ever since.

During the day four more attacks were launched against IPTorrents, HDBits, The Vault and SceneAccess.
At the time of writing What.cd, BroadcastTheNet and SceneAccess remain inaccessible. The other sites can be reached but were offline earlier today.
From the looks of it Zeiko (who now hates torrents) is indeed responsible for the downtime at these popular private BitTorrent trackers, but thus far we haven’t been able to get this confirmed by any of the site staff.
One thing’s for certain though, torrent invites are serious business.
Update: The BTN site is back but the tracker remains offline, citing a DDoS attack.
Update: SceneAccess appears to be back online.
